Weird Halloween Costumes

From LoveToKnow Costumes

The first thing you should bear in mind if you’re interested in wearing weird Halloween costumes is that the notion of “weird” is arbitrary. That is, what you may think or hope is weird could be perfectly normal, depending on the crowd. You should be aware that if you want to be seen as unique, in either a funny or scary way, you may be disappointed in the varied reactions, depending on the venue.

What's weird tends to depend on your point of view.

The Basics of Weird Halloween Costumes

Bearing the above in mind, there are a few approaches you can take if you wish to wear a weird costume, and most of them will involve thought and some effort, although they don’t have to be expensive.

If you’re not afraid of being tasteles or controversial, there will always be topical routes. For Halloween in 2005, a number of variations of the tragic Hurricane Katrina were portrayed in costume. People can also find ways to express rising gas prices in a costume, or election fraud. You will usually have to explain yourself, but you’re likely to get a laugh, or at least a raised eyebrow.

Objects, rather than characters, are often seen as weird. With the help of a large box, you can dress as an X-ray, a washing machine, or a shower.

Some bizarre Halloween costumes can be really simple to create. You can stick duct tape down an old sweatshirt and carry a boxing glove to be a punch line. Bear in mind that you may be tipping into “stupid” rather than weird, but if you need a last minute costume and don’t feel like spending money, it’s a simple way to go.

Finally, there’s the unexpected. A small twist on something common can be strange, like a fairy princess with a meat cleaver or a dead Santa Claus. These can be easy costumes too, because you can take something you already have at home and add a few details to make it different.

Group Costume Ideas

Some of the better weird Halloween costumes can be put together with group effort. One Halloween festival saw groups of people dressed as a plate of sushi, complete with wasabi and soy sauce, a Picasso painting, an all male cast of I Love Lucy performing several popular episodes, a Supreme Court case, or a reenactment of a beer commercial. All these costumes were big hits of the parade and won prizes, but the participants acknowledged that a lot of time, money and hard work went into the thought and building of the costumes. Nearly everyone in the group was involved in the film or theater industry and either knew people who could design complicated costumes that included lighting and sound effects or could do so themselves.

Theme Parties

A theme party is another venue for guests to express themselves and show their individuality with specific costumes or themes that they feel comfortable with.

Politics, literature and art are popular themes, but you can go even further into the world of wacky than that. One Hollywood party of note had a theme of Creepy Christmas, so that all the attendees wore a ghoulish theme on holiday cheer. A “Bloody” Virgin Mary, Rudolph With Rabies, Decapitated Caroler and a burned tree were in attendance, as well as a hapless husband electrocuted while putting up lights. What can be great about a theme party is that it allows your guests to be a little more creative and have more than the usual fun time putting something together.

Ultimately, it’s about what you want to do and what feels pleasantly weird to you, so knock yourself out and have a lovely, weird time.
