An All-Time Favorite: Spiderman

Spiderman has been part of the American pop culture scene since the early 1980’s when the popularity of the comic book grew to such heights as to spawn several animated series as well as a live action Spiderman television show. When the 80’s began to commercialize its icons, Spiderman was on the forefront with party plates, action figures and Halloween costumes. Of course, costumes of late consisted of plastic shirt vests and stiff plastic spidey masks that could practically slit your throat if you moved the wrong way.

The Many Faces of Spandex Spiderman Costumes

Many remember the traditional spandex Spiderman costumes that consisted of a red and blue alternating pattern with black webbing lines and two large spider logos. The costume Spidey wore looked to be one unit and for the purposes of the television show, it was. He was able to slip inside the suit through a very small opening because spandex is highly flexible.

Spiderman, the staple of society that he is, has several costumes to choose from, at least from the comic book stand point, what’s available for resale, however, is very limited.

Standard Spiderman: Our friendly neighborhood webslinger from the beginning days of the comic to the big time movies of the day has always been seen in the good old red and blue outfit which consists of black (sometimes also seen in white) web lines over the red top, mask, arms and feet. A full mask, long sleeves and boots are also a part of the ensemble.

Venomized Spiderman: The symbiote known as Venom became an integral part of the Spiderman universe and this also introduced the much loved black and white spidey costume.

The above costumes vary in quality and you will soon find out that with cheap costumes you lose a few things such as gloves and boots. Deluxe costumes are more expensive but are also the best looking and most accurate to the comic book version. Movie versions are available in a darker blue and red as well as a darker web line pattern.

Bag-Man: Not many remember this as it only happened twice in the comic that saw Spiderman wearing an old Fantastic Four costume with a bag over his head and a kick me sign on the back.

Spider-Armor: Used in the battled against the New Enforcers Peter Parker made a Spiderman suit that consisted of armor plating. You could do the same by taking cheap aluminum cookie sheets from the dollar store and painting them with a dark wash then cutting and attaching to a Spiderman suit.

Six-Armed Spiderman: Peter wanted to be rid of Spiderman forever and created a serum that gave him six arms. Make this costume rough cutting two holes on both sides of the Spiderman costume and attaching fake arms to each. Attach clear fishing line between arms at the wrist, elbow and armpit to simulate real movement.

Iron Spider: Tony Stark aka Iron Man created a Spiderman suit that closely resembled Iron Man’s. Create this outfit by using an Iron Man costume and giving it the standard Spiderman paint job.

There are more Spiderman variations and characters such as Scarlet Spider, Blood Spider, Spiderman 2211 and Spiderman 2099 not to mention Spider-Woman and her many different costumes.
