Saved By the Bell Costumes
From LoveToKnow Costumes
Whether for a Halloween party or any fancy dress occasion, preferably of the funny variety, Saved by the Bell costumes are a fun, comfortable, relatively easy and inexpensive option for a group of six who can’t get enough of the retro '80s vibe.
Buying Saved by the Bell Costumes
The exact look for the Saved by the Bell characters is considered by diehard fans to be difficult to pull off. If you’re going to a TV-show theme party, a Saved by the Bell convention or competing in a contest, you will have to put in some serious thought and effort to devise the perfect costume. Fortunately, some of the more difficult costume elements can be purchased online.
Screech’s borderline terrifying tower of curly hair is an intimidating obstacle for would-be costumers, but Eighties Tees sells a not-bad reproduction of the wig for only $15. Put it on and there you have it: instant mini-fro. People will definitely screech when they see you. While you’re buying the wig, take a look at Eighties Tees’ stock of Saved by the Bell tee shirts. The perfect one for Screech is the Bayside Tigers shirt. It is mustard yellow with the Bayside Tigers logo and made of 100% pre-shrunk cotton. Sizes are Adult from Small to 2XL and cost $20. Couple these with a Hawaiian button down shirt left open, big shorts, possibly a pair of rainbow suspenders and giant sunglasses and you’re done.
Haunt Thrift and Vintage Stores
So that’s Screech taken care of, but how do you comprise other Saved by the Bell costumes? First, have a sense of who ought to wear what. Here are some general ideas:
- Zack: You want a preppy look for Zack, so nice trousers, loafers and a polo shirt with slicked-back hair would be the simplest way to go.
- Slater: Almost any athletic gear will work. Try a tank top with sweats and a letterman’s jacket.
- Kelly: A skirt and blouse would do, but a cheerleading outfit could work as well.
- Lisa: Here you want to look 80s expensive and fashionable. Try a good dress or shirt and jacket with boots and an interesting hat to finish the look.
- Jessie: Her look is more conservative, so a dress shirt and tie with khakis would work, and if you don’t have long hair you can curl, you’ll have to invest in a wig.
The good news is all these items can be found in thrift and vintage clothing shops. Most you should be able to buy for rock-bottom prices. For items like letterman’s jackets and cheerleading outfits, you may have to hit a costume rental store, but one of the many nice things about dressing as part of a group theme, besides getting to hang around with five close friends all night, is that together you make the impact. People won’t notice “imperfections” in an individual costume when they’re faced with a group that’s clearly made an effort to capture a look and mood.
Finishing Touches
With a group theme, it’s not just the look that makes a costume, but the attitude. A popular show like Saved by the Bell allows you to integrate props, gestures and catch phrases into your costume that are guaranteed to impress the party, provided everyone knows the show.
Here are some examples:
- Zack: Carry a big cell phone. You can find one in a thrift shop or make one out of cardboard. Include time outs and the phrase “How ya doing?”
- Screech: Remember Slater’s Aloha party? Use the phrase “My pet” with abandon.
- Slater: Call everyone “Mama” until they threaten to throttle you.
- Kelly: It’s all about the hair flip. Get that down, and say “I think I’m gonna cry” a few times and you’re Kelly.
- Lisa: Refer to Screech as a different creature every chance you get and be sure to ask people: “Am I a ten or what?”
- Jessie: This phrase is perfect at a Halloween party: “I’m so excited! I’m so…scared!”
Let the 1980s live forever, or at least for one night.
