A pirate costume for a toddler is similar to a pirate costume for a bigger person, but of course not as sexy for the girls. A basic pirate costume for either a boy or a girl will include pants and a white shirt (sometimes in one piece), a hat (sometimes with attached hair), a belt and maybe shoe covers.

Costumes for tiny pirates also often include a vest, which may or may not be attached to the rest of the costume. Having pieces that are all sown together is great for the simplicity of getting your little one dressed an undressed through the evening.

Make Your Own Pirate Costumes

For toddlers it is relatively easy to make your own pirate costumes. All you need is a pair of pants, preferably striped pants, a flowing white shirt, some fabric for a sash and a hat.

You can use sweatpants or pajama bottoms for the pants and a plain white long-sleeved shirt if you can't find or make a peasant style blouse in your child's size. Or try ripped-legged jeans and a black and white striped shirt. You can also add a loose-fitting vest (which could be made quite easily by altering a pillowcase) for a more authentic look.

A sash can be made of any bright-colored fabric, and could also be used to cover the head, do-rag style, if you don't want to make or buy a hat. Pirate hats can easily be made with store-bought felt, or you can buy them at most any Halloween store or in the Halloween section of your local discount chain or even some grocery stores.

Safety Tips for Wee Pirates

Probably the most important thing to think about when you're planning a pirate costume for your toddler is whether you want to give him or her traditional pirate accessories.

A lot of the pictures online show cute little kids donning plastic swords, but if you think your child would cause more damage with his or her sword, feel free to leave that part out.

Eye patches are also cute on bigger pirates but may cause your little one some trouble when trying to walk around. Especially if you are going trick or treating, you don't want your child's view of the world to be obstructed, so just leave this part of the costume off.
