Pet Costume Ideas
From LoveToKnow Costumes
Even in tough times, fun must still be had, and that's where amusing pet costume ideas come into play. Whether homemade or store-bought, you can clad your pet inexpensively in some silly human attire for a good laugh and a chance at a costume prize, hopefully something that awards you and your good-natured animal friend.
Common Pet Costume Ideas
Dog costumes are the easiest and most obvious pet costume ideas. After all, you take your dog out for display at least once a day already. Unlike cats, dogs will usually be more compliant about putting on clothes. Many dogs are used to rain jackets or warm coats, so it's not a huge stretch to don a costume.
Because many dogs are used to a little jacket of sorts, any costume that only demands something similar is easy to convince a dog to wear. So jackets such as Dracula capes, witches, fairies or dinosaurs are very common. Many also come with a headpiece. The dog will often resist the initial try-on, but once it's on, he or she will be fine, so long as it doesn't interfere with sight or hearing.
Dressing dogs like other creatures: ladybugs, bees, bats, is also very typical. These costumes don't have to be elaborate to be cute and funny. And you can buy them just about anywhere that sells pet gear.
Other Pet Costumes
Getting the family cat into a costume can be a challenge. Some cats are very easy-going and will tolerate just about anything, whereas others will make sure you never come near them with fabric again. Of course, most cats don't go out on leashes, so dressing them up is usually just for home parties.
However, one fun idea is to think inside the box – the cat carrier. Many people dress their cats in old fashioned striped prisoner costumes and carry them around in their little "jail."
This can be applied to other pet costumes. If there is more than one pet, you can create a "couple" by, say, dressing the other as a jailor. Large birds can also be dressed as prisoners, and it's very amusing to have the cat be guard.
If a cat allows you to costume it, you can dress it as a leprechaun, bunny, Pilgrim or bee.
Horses and ponies are easy to dress up, especially since they already wear blankets after riding. You can dress them in Mexican serapes and sombreros, or, in a nice twist, cowboys.
Costume for small dogs can be used for large iguanas, or pet pigs. Even a turtle can get in on the fun. You can strap a plastic shark's fin around it – very amusing when it's swimming. You can even put a headdress on a bunny.
More Elaborate Costumes
Dog costumes have grown increasingly elaborate over the years. Some enterprising designer found that little "arms" could be attached to a costume, so that once a dog's front legs were inside, it looked like a little person. Thus, dogs become believable superheroes, pirates, chefs and their nemesis – the mailman.
Animal costumes can really run the gamut, with pets being encased in all manner of fabric and accessories. It is possible to go overboard, so gauge accordingly. A dog can't tell you if it's uncomfortable, but you'll probably be able to tell.
Making Costumes
You can buy any number of fun costumes for a reasonable price. Second-hand costumes are available on eBay and Craig's List and shops often have sales. But you can try getting crafty too and have the laugh without spending too much money. You don't need to know how to sew to rig up a pair of cardboard wings to attach to a dog jacket. Once you start thinking along these lines, you'll come up with any number of ideas. Whatever you do, try something small first to make sure your pet will go through with it!
