Pebbles and Bam Bam Costumes
From LoveToKnow Costumes
With so many Disney characters and new Halloween faces making an appearance this year, old favorites like Pebbles and Bam Bam costumes are unique. Although the Flintstones began in 1960 and ended its run in 1966 after only 6 seasons, the characters lived on in a cavalcade of spin-offs and movies.
Who Would Wear Pebbles and Bam Bam Costumes
The cartoon world of the Flintstones is ingrained on the minds of several generations. Costumes based off either of the series or live action features can be worn by virtually anyone.
Infants and Toddlers
The original series style of Pebbles and Bam Bam costumes are suitable for children from infants to toddlers. When Pebbles and Bam Bam first appeared in the series, Bam Bam was a toddler and Pebbles was still crawling. This means, if you have a young girl who is still crawling, Pebbles would make a perfect costume idea for her. On the other hand, if you have a son that is at the toddler stage and walking, Bam Bam would be a great fit.
Pre-Schoolers
Children between the ages of 2-4 can also be Pebbles and Bam Bam this Halloween. Hanna-Barbera, along with Cartoon Network, produced a show in 1996 called Cave Kids: Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm. The show only lasted for just 8 episodes and was educational in nature.
School Aged Children
The Flintstone Kids was created in the mid 80’s and followed the adventures of Pebbles and Bam Bam between the ages of 8-10. Older kids just starting out in school up to the 6th grade or so can portray the likenesses of Pebbles and Bam Bam.
Teens and Adults
As the Flintstones cartoon ended the folks at Hanna-Barbera thought it would be great to continue on with the characters. In 1971, The Pebbles and Bam-Bam Show was born. This first spin-off lasted only one season and consisted of 16 30-minute episodes and a handful of 10-minute shorts during The Flintstone Comedy Hour. The show followed the now teenaged and dating Pebbles and Bam Bam as they attended Bedrock High.
Dissecting the Costumes
With so many shows and costumes in which to draw your ideas off of it can be helpful to understand what is needed for them.
Pebbles
Pebbles was the cute, mischievous child of Fred and Wilma. As an infant her costume was a simple diaper and a cute purple shirt (at times it was orange). Her red hair was pulled in a ponytail and secured with a bone. In later episodes of the original show, the costume took a few different turns going from plain to pink leopard and then the familiar orange. The diaper was changed out for pink romper shorts.
When Pebbles grew up and starting dating Bam Bam she primarily wore a pink leopard sleeveless shirt that was “torn” at the bottom. Black shorts with the same familiar “torn” look were also worn. Blue shorts were also sometimes seen as well as a green leopard print one.
Shoes, of course, are optional but the bone in the hair is a must have.
Bam Bam
Bam Bam as a toddler was easy. He always had that familiar club and cute leopard skin hat as well as striking white hair. His bottoms were jagged, cut shorts that were held up with a leopard skin sash connected to the shorts with a bone.
The teen and adult version is very similar to the toddler costume. He still wore the brown, jagged cut shorts but they stayed up all on their own and they were also below the knee. He wore a white sleeveless t-shirt and a leopard skin vest. The club and hat were still very much a part of the costume.
Obtaining the Costumes
There are two ways to get a costume for either Bam Bam or Pebbles in either stage of their lives. You can either buy them yourself or make them.
Make the Costumes Yourself
Making Pebbles and Bam Bam Costumes is not at all difficult to do as can be seen from Coolest Homemade Costumes website.
Bam Bam
The first challenge is locating the leopard print fabric. Nearly every fabric store local to you will carry leopard print fabric and even some Wal-Mart stores may have it.
Bam Bam as a toddler didn’t wear a shirt but if you are dressing a younger child you may want to consider a muscle shirt bought from a costume store. You can also make them yourself by sewing flaps of matching color fabric to a skin tone shirt and nearly sealing them completely. You then stuff them with cotton before finishing off the sewing. Attach the sash and shorts with a bone that has a pin backing glued to it.
Teenage Bam Bam wore a white sleeveless t-shirt and a leopard vest with jagged edges where the sleeves would normally be. You can purchase or find a free vest pattern online and use leopard skin fabric. The hat can also be made this way.
The club is a must for Bam Bam. The club could be a baseball bat, an inflatable club bought from a costume store or you could make your own. The baseball bat is the perfect shape but lacks the “club” look. You can change this easily by:
- Crumple light brown packing paper and wrap it around the bat for size and fit
- Cover the bat with a thin layer of spray adhesive
- Place the paper over the bat when the adhesive becomes tacky
- Use black water color and a brush to lightly tint the crevices of the paper
Add a white wig to finish the look. If going for a younger Bam Bam you can purchase a mask.
Pebbles
Pebbles wore a generic baby shirt with a ruffled neck and diapers as a baby. As a teenager the shirt become more of a dress. The exact color had several styles from purple and pink to orange and green. All were leopard prints and so you may need to find a white cotton dress and dye it. The leopard print can be made by following a simple pattern of cut out blobs and using a permanent marker to trace and fill in. Pre-schooler Pebbles wore the same type of shirt as baby Pebbles but went from diapers to green or blue shorts with jagged cut legs.
Pebbles always had red hair and if you do that’s great! However, if you don’t you could always color it or wear a wig. If doing the costume for a baby then their natural hair will work just as well. Pull the hair up and add a bone to it. There are also some companies that sell Pebbles wigs made out of vinyl as well as masks.
Purchasing
There are quite a few retailers that carry Pebbles and Bam Bam costumes:
The price range varies from store to store but the average price of full costumes is about $45.00 and $50.00-$60.00 with accessories.
