Online Halloween Costume

These days, it’s almost easier to buy an online Halloween costume than one in a brick-and-mortar store. There is so much choice and competition online, you can get some real bargains. You do, of course, have to exercise some caution, but for the average costume, buying online makes a lot of sense.

Whether you want a cheap, generic costume that could be found in a drugstore or specialty Halloween store, or are interested in something far more elaborate and high quality, it can all be found online. There are sites that sell Halloween costumes all year long and sites that specialize in specific costumes that can be used for a variety of occasions, such as medieval or Renaissance costumes, which can be used for Renaissance Faires, Cosplay events, the SCA and other such re-enactments, to say nothing of theatre and film.

When it comes to these better costumes, your choices can be somewhat more limited because you are dealing with the online equivalent of small boutiques, rather than a huge warehouse. You want to browse them with more care, because these costumes can be very expensive and you'll want to be sure you are getting the most bang for your buck.

One of the biggest, most obvious problems with buying a online Halloween costume is that you can’t try it on first. If you are buying a cheap costume in a package, this is not such a hardship – you wouldn’t be able to try it on in a warehouse or drugstore either. Most of those costumes just run a basic small, medium, large and aren’t so fitted that being slightly off makes much difference.

However, if you’re splurging on something more elaborate, not being able to feel the fabric or really assess the colors before buying can be a challenge. And then of course, there’s the fit. The fussier the costume, the more important it is that you get a good fit, otherwise, although an outfit may be beautifully made and lovely to look at, it won’t have the visual impact it should. As well, you want it to be as comfortable as possible. A Victorian gown complete with corset and bustle is not exactly anyone’s idea of comfort, but if it’s well designed and fits right, you can learn to move in it with ease. So do bear in mind that you are taking some risks if you choose this option. If you are hoping to wear the costume any days besides Halloween, you might want to reconsider.

Since many people do not have access to a quality brick-and-mortar shop or a sewing professional, one way to shop online and yet still get a good fit is to work with a designer. Many sites offer the option of a custom design. You can send in your measurements, choose a fabric and pattern and even have fittings, as they will send you muslin mockups of the costume to try on. You can even send the finished piece back for alterations, should that be necessary. The entire process can take six weeks or considerably less if you are on a tight deadline. As you might expect, this will not be an inexpensive venture, but for a costume you want to look and fit exactly right and last a long time, it’s a good investment.

Although many sites will carry the same costumes, you might be surprised by the price differences. It’s definitely worth a little more time to shop around.
