Newborn Halloween Costumes are Cute

Let’s face it… newborn Halloween costumes are most definitely not for the infant – they’re for the parents. A young baby barely knows the difference between day and night, let alone why a costume is important on Halloween! Parents, on the other hand, know how adorable it is to dress a newborn in a costume.

Newborn Halloween Costumes

Parents only have one, two, or possibly three years of a child’s life to dress him or her in their choice of costumes on Halloween. These early years are really the only opportunities for parents to decide what the child will wear on Halloween, because after the age of three, a child will undoubtedly only dress in something he or she personally chooses.

It’s Not About the Candy

At such a young age, a baby is not going to dress in an elaborate Halloween costume and go trick-or-treating. Especially in cold climates, it’s not practical to take a young baby outside after dark.

Basically, a costume for a young baby is more for picture-taking opportunities or going to an early Halloween party than about anything else. Nonetheless, it’s still fun to see an infant dressed as a pumpkin, a puppy, or any other costume!

Spending a Lot of Money

Due to the fact that costumes for infants are incredibly impractical, it’s important to remember that the outfit will probably only be worn for a short period of time. Knowing this, the most expensive costume in the store will probably prove to not be worthwhile. A costume that is $50 and only worn for a half hour is pretty expensive!

Yes… a cute costume for an infant is very amusing. Everyone will love how it looks and will make endless comments about how adorable the baby looks – but is it worth a small fortune?

Some infant costumes can actually be converted into stuffed animals after they are worn, so this factor may play a role in how much money should be spent on it.

What to Look For

Your best bet for newborn Halloween costumes are buntings. These one-piece costumes are similar to onesies or newborn sleepers. They are generally made of soft cotton or fleece, with no irritating lace or attachments. Buntings cover the newborn's feet, offering a snug feeling of security.

Newborn Halloween costumes are readily available online. The following sites offer Halloween-appropriate buntings for your little one:

Showing Off is a Must

After you have found the perfect costume for baby, you have to show it off! However, bringing the baby trick-or-treating is not necessarily the best way to accomplish this.

Here are some ideas on how to make sure the baby is seen:

  • Host a Halloween Party – If the baby is too young to go trick-or-treating, or if the weather will be too cold, host a Halloween party so that everyone can get a good look at the little one in his or her costume.
  • Go Somewhere During the Day on October 31 – For goodness' sakes, do not dress a baby in a cute costume and then stay home all day. Take the baby to visit mom or dad at work, get together with friends for a play date, or run errands… anything to get that baby seen in his or her costume!
  • Go to the Mall – Many malls across America host Halloween events or inside trick-or-treating for young kids. This is a perfect opportunity to take a newborn out in his or her costume!
  • Let the Baby “Help” Pass Out Candy – Most babies that are not fast asleep on the night of Halloween will enjoy seeing all of the ghosts and goblins that come to the door for candy. Let the baby see what’s going on, and at the same time, all of the trick-or-treaters and their parents can see the baby in his or her full attire!

Visit the Grandparents

While there are always exceptions, most grandparents live for seeing their infant grandchildren on holidays such as Halloween.

If the baby’s grandparents live in the same city, it’s fun to put the baby in a great costume and then bring him or her to the grandparent’s house to “trick-or-treat.” Since most grandparents will not expect to see a tiny baby in a cute costume at their door, the surprise will be priceless.

The only potential “problem” with taking a newborn baby to grandma and grandpa’s house on Halloween is that they will want to take the baby all over the neighborhood to show off their newest pride and joy to everyone on the block!
