Halloween Pun Costumes

For a quick, cheap and possibly funny costume, a Halloween pun costume is always good for an appreciative groan and has the benefit of being relatively easy. All that's required is some thought and a touch of silly creativity.

Lots of costumes can be constructed from puns.

Whoever first came up with the idea of Halloween pun costumes either deserves a medal or a pie in the face, but they are now a staple of every party and sometimes so clever, they win contests for sheer originality. Simply put, they are a visual representation of a saying, thus creating the pun. You can attach a picture of Sigmund Freud to a slip, wear the slip, and thus be a "Freudian Slip." Get it? It's awful, but it works for a wide category of people, and is nearly always good for a few laughs. Also, they are usually cheap costumes that are quick to throw together – a major consideration for many.

When opting for a Halloween pun costume, most people find they get the best costume by coming up with the pun first and then figuring out how to construct it visually, as opposed to scanning their wardrobe and accessories and letting that tilt the decision. Don't consider how hard something might be to make visual, just concentrate on what you'd like to do. Most people find that once they have the idea, putting it together is quite easy.

Obviously, you want your Halloween costume to be unique, but the reality is there are very few ideas that haven't been done in some manner or other. What will make your costume special is how you choose to represent it. So, if you're having trouble coming up with a phrase or idea, here are some classics:

• Cereal Killer (carry a box of cereal with a knife through it)
• Black-Eyed Pea (black one eye and wear a "P" on your shirt)
• Chick Magnet (pin pictures of baby chicks to your shirt – a variation is "Animal Magnetism")
• Legal Briefs (wear a suit and pin underwear to it)
• Holy Cow (cow costumes are popular, so add a halo and it's that much better)
• White Trash (dress all in white and pin some clean items for the trash to yourself – or just wear a sign that says "Trash")

The list goes on and on – you're only limited by your imagination.

Obviously, when you have a little more time to work on something, you can go further with it. A pun costume can still be elaborate, should you so desire. It can even be a couple or group costume. If everyone dresses in green, you are Gang Green. A few women in mining outfits with gold accessories and shovels are Gold Diggers. The ideas are endless!

Depending on the party you're attending, you may want to be mindful of some puns. Hopefully, everyone has a good sense of humor, but if it's a fairly conservative crowd, there are some costumes you should avoid. On the other hand, if the crowd appreciates something a bit out there and edgy, you can try some of these:

• Rubber Tree – attaching condoms to your clothes and perhaps wearing foliage on your head, or adding leaves between the condoms
• Bloody Mary – dressing as the Virgin Mary but either adding blood or carrying celery, tomatoes and Tabasco sauce
• Boob Tube – for either gender, wear the biggest, tackiest fake breasts you can find and glue an empty toilet paper or paper towel tube in the cleavage. Or pick any of a number of variations!

Anything goes with a pun costume, and nothing is too corny or tacky, so get creative!
