Classic Halloween Costumes for Teenagers

Each year there are certain costumes that are the must haves. They aren’t necessarily costumes straight from the television shows; in fact, many of them are considered iconic. The following is a brief list of popular costumes that usually sell out quickly.

  • Superman and Supergirl – go as a couple or individually. While the Superman costume changes only slightly over the years, Supergirl has turned super sexy in high-heeled boots and a cut-off shirt.
  • Politicians – each year mask makers have a ball making masks of top political figures. Top performers are always the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates. If you are a guy, all you need is a suit to go with the mask. Women will have to find a pantsuit or skirt suit to wear with a Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin mask and a hairdo to go with them.
  • Lara Croft Tombraider – a common complaint is that this costume is always sold out. A lot of strong women identify with this popular character. Costume options range from slightly conservative, in terms of the top, to ultra-scanty and sexy.
  • Vampire – This is one of the perennial favorites, along with mummies, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein
  • Wonder Woman
  • Lord of the Rings Arwen
  • Pirate
  • Nun
  • Witch
  • Fortune Teller

Make Your Own Costume

Sometimes it is hard to make up your mind which costume you want to wear. Occasionally when you procrastinate you may not be able to find the costume you want at the last minute. Luckily, many costumes can be made quickly at home in a day or two. In many cases, no sewing is required. All you need is a little ingenuity and enough time to pull it off!

Consider gathering the parts of your costume together by shopping in the following places:

  • Thrift stores – check out your local Salvation Army stores or other local thrift shops to find parts of a costume you need. You may even find a complete costume, such as a gangster, Grease character or bride dress at incredible prices!
  • Retail stores – get the accessories you need at stores that carry lots of accessories in their Halloween section of the store. Expect dramatic markdowns the week of Halloween and especially on Halloween day.
  • Fabric stores – often overlooked by those who don’t sew, many of these fabric stores stock lots of ready-made Halloween accessories including masks, pistols, ears and tails, makeup and more. They dramatically mark down their Halloween inventory the week of the holiday and may even sell items for half-off on Halloween day.

Finally, don’t forget to hit up your own parent’s closet or attic for Halloween costumes (ask first, of course!).
