Halloween Costumes for Teenage Girls

From LoveToKnow Costumes

It can be a source of ongoing exasperation for both parents and daughters that Halloween costumes for teenage girls are predominately sexy, stereotypical, and just plain stupid. Boys have a wide range of styles to choose from, while girls are forced into a mold. For the girl who wants a look that’s more unique, she may be stuck making a costume herself.

Rather than dressing sexy, a girl might opt for being scary.

Basic Halloween Costumes for Teenage Girls

The old standards have existed for decades. Once a girl decides she’s too old to dress as a princess, fairy or storybook character, her options change to any variant on a witch, cat, queen or gypsy. She may choose to be a sexy superhero, such as Wonder Woman or Batgirl, or sport a bubbly 1950s poodle skirt with ponytails abound for a boppy bobby-soxer reinactment. There are also 1960s flower power hippies and Mod girl costumes from which to choose. Some girls go Goth, some still go for Hermione Granger of Harry Potter fame, especially if they’re part of a wizard group, and some do like a scary vampire look; but the fact remains, there are not many choices in buying or renting a unique costume, and fewer choices are available that don’t involve looking excessively feminine or sexy.

Character Costumes

When choosing Halloween costumes for teenage girls that go a little bit outside the standard box, many girls, with or without parental input, go for famous characters, both fictional or real. Shakespeare’s women make for some fun choices. Juliet is popular, especially since she’s one of the most famous teenagers of all time, but if you want to change it up, go as Juliet after she’s killed herself. It will take some ingenuity, but you can sew some red ribbons to hang from the heart over your medieval or Renaissance dress and carry a bloody dagger.

Another fun, bloody character is Lady Macbeth after she’s gone insane. This is also a cheap and easy costume because she just wears a long nightgown. You can add a cloak if you like for interest and warmth, and a circlet and necklace. The main detail in this getup is the stage blood all over your hands. If you have a friend, boyfriend or brother willing to dress as Macbeth, you can both wear full costumes and have bloody hands and carry daggers, having just killed the king and his guards.

Shakespeare’s women often disguised themselves as men, allowing for some costume creativity. Viola from Twelfth Night and Rosalind from As You Like It may not carry recognizable props and certainly aren’t as well known as they could be, but these choices allow a girl to wear men’s medieval or Renaissance clothes and have some fun, which is really all that matters.

If you want to dress as a fairy, there are two in the canon that allow your style to run wild. No, not Titania, but rather Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, who is very impish. For a softer, but not sexy look, you can also dress as Ariel from The Tempest”.

Getting a Laugh

There aren’t many of ready made Halloween costumes for teenage girls that are funny, which is a shame considering how many girls like to garner real laughs. Many of the above costumes are certainly good for a laugh. You can also go for outrageous 1970s and 1980s looks such as Cher and Cyndi Lauper, who are both funny and fabulous. Since girls dressing as guys is often funny, go further and dress as a noted old comic performer such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton or Groucho Marx. If you want to be comical, a bit sexy and conjure a famous character, you can do it all in a fabulous Mae West costume.

Taking No Prisoners

There aren’t enough powerful female characters that make for great costumes, but a pirate queen is a popular costume that lets you show off your swashbuckling techniques in style. Pirates, even without the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, never go out of fashion, no matter your age.
