Why save the bunny costumes for Easter when you can be a cute and fuzzy Halloween bunny?

Beginning the Bunny Costume

For the base of the costume, use a sweatshirt and sweatpants or a pair of pajamas with feet. While rabbits in the real world are brown, gray, black, or white, Halloween bunny costumes can be any color, from pink to turquoise. Starting with these basics, the costume really comes to life through accessories.

Halloween Bunny Accessories

The Ears Make the Bunny

While costume designs vary, the one constant for all bunnies is the ears. Even the skimpiest Halloween bunny costume includes a pair of ears.

Bunny ears can be a bit more difficult to make than other animal ears because they should be fairly lengthy, yet should also be stiff. Cut a pair of ears out of cardboard and cover them with felt, cotton, or fake fur for a fuzzy effect. You can also bend wire into an ear shape and cover it with fabric, or even an old sock. Whatever their design, attach the ears to a headband to keep them on your head.

If you don't want to make your own, it should be easy to find ear and tail packages, sometimes including a fuzzy bow tie. It's a relatively cheap accessory kit you can use over and over again, even as the base costume changes.

Cottontail

A big fluffy tail adds personality to any Halloween bunny costume. You can buy a pre-made tail, or you can make your own fairly easily. Look for a large white pompon, or cover a foam or rubber ball with cotton. The easiest way to attach the tail to a costume is to use glue, but if you want to reuse your pants, you can also pin it on. When attaching a tail to your costume, take care to place it high enough so it won't get in the way when you sit down.

The Face

Use Halloween make-up, face paint, or lipstick to color your nose pink and draw on whiskers in black or brown. Plastic noses are also available, and don't forget the rabbit's signature teeth.

A Little Snack

A carrot is a cute accessory to carry around with a bunny costume. For a "just-pulled-from-the-garden" look, buy a fresh bunch of carrots at your local grocery store, complete with green stalks. A stuffed carrot may be a more practical choice, however. Cut a carrot outline out of two pieces of fabric or felt, glue or sew the edges, and stuff with cotton, fiberfill, or batting. Add lines for the carrot's "wrinkles" with a black marker or fabric paint. If you plan ahead for your next Halloween costume, you may also find stuffed, plastic, or inflatable carrots during the Easter season.

Bunny Costumes for Kids

Bunnies make great bunting and sleepers for the tiniest trick-or-treaters. Toddlers and older children can have fun with full bunny suits.

Full-Body Costumes for Adults

While most people are content to simply attach some ears to their heads, others want to become the bunny. Full-body costumes can fill all your full-bunny-disguise needs. Check out Easter Bunny Costumes and Nightmare Factory for some of the available options.

This type of costume is often designed for professional use, and can be quite expensive. If you only want to wear the costume once, this would be a great time to consider a rental. Since most people will be looking for these costumes in the spring, you should have your pick of the stock in October.

Safety Considerations

If you wear a full-body costume, take care not to become overheated. Take the head off and allow yourself time to breathe at regular intervals. Drink plenty of fluids and don't overexert yourself. You should also stay indoors when wearing this costume. Your kids might love having the Easter bunny escort them from house to house for trick-or-treating, but the head will obstruct your vision too much to be safe.

The Sexy Bunny

Perhaps it was the Playboy bunny that first made women realize bunnies could be sexy. Some of the costumes available for purchase online include:

You can use these costumes as inspiration to make your own sexy Halloween bunny costume. Just add matching ears to a lingerie set or a leotard. The cottontail is optional because you might not have enough fabric to pin one on.
