Clowns are a classic Halloween costume.

Classic But Good Ideas for Halloween Costumes

The Witch

Girls can be witches with very little effort or money. The basics of the costumes are a black dress – you can use one from your closet – and a black hat. These are available for only a few dollars. Dress up the witch costume by adding tights and black shoes. Makeup and face paint works really well to create a more authentic look. You also can pick up fake moles and wigs as accessories for this classic Halloween costume. Use a robe and staff for boys to be wizards.

The Ghost

There is no simpler costume. Get a white sheet; cut out eye holes. Drape this sheet over the head of the little one, and you are ready to go out trick-or-treating. Just be sure they can actually see out the eye holes and that the sheet isn't so long they'll trip on it.

Pirates

Boys and girls – and men and women – can get in on pirate costumes for Halloween. Girls and women will need a black skirt and tights. The best tights are striped, and they are available in most Halloween stores or the costume section of discount store. Also pick up a pirate’s hat and a patch to create a better pirate look. Elaborate costumes can include a faux parrot on the shoulder or a hook for a hand. Male pirates can use the basic basis for the costumes with a vest, white shirt and black pants.

Some of these costumes can be found ready-made in the stores, or you can make your own custom design.

Creative and Fun Costumes

Fun and funny aren’t necessarily the same costumes, but there are plenty of ideas out there to make people smirk this Halloween. There are two rules for getting good ideas for Halloween costumes that are fun. The first is going all the way with the idea. An incomplete fun costume will look silly, but if you have used up all creativity in putting the costume together, you just may have a winner. The second rule is to surprise people. The unexpected is best for fun costumes.

The Pencil

Who would think of being a writing implement for Halloween? Dressing up as a pencil is pretty simple. To be the classic No. 2 pencil, wear a dark yellow sweat suit. You can stitch on “No. 2” in black letters if you do not plan to wear the clothes again. Then wear silver or gray socks with pink ballet slippers. On your head, you will need to design a cone for the pencil tip. You can use this concept to be notepads, pens, keyboards and many other everyday items.

Candy

Being a Hershey’s Kiss isn’t all that creative, but designing your own candy costume can be a fun experience. Pick your favorite candy and try to replicate it. If you can sew, you can make a circular candy of a bright color. Put holes for your feet and arms and stuff with a polyester filler. You also could be a candy bar. Design the wrapper with aluminum foil and fabric to make a vertically standing candy bar. Name the candy bar after yourself or use something cute, such as “Chocolate Dream” or “Sweet and Tasty.”

Other Fun and Creative Ideas

These ideas are fairly common but have the possibility of being more exciting that your average costume. Try creative or funny Halloween costumes to get people talking. They work for adults and children.

  • Mardi Gras costumes
  • Household objects (television, computer mouse, lamp, etc.)
  • Occupations
  • Plays on current events
  • Condiment-laden burger
