Fairy Costume Ideas

From LoveToKnow Costumes

Fairy costume ideas can range from the very simple and basic to the truly outrageous, it all depends upon your inclination and imagination, as well as your time frame. A fairy can be a great choice for a last-minute costume idea or an elaborate arrangement for a group.

Basic Fairy Costume Ideas

The age-old idea of a fairy can be put together with one trip to the party store almost any time of year – you just need wings. You don't necessarily need anything else, but whatever you add that sparkles is definitely good. Eyeshadow, antennae, perhaps a wand – match these with any pretty dress or dance outfit, or even just a blouse and leggings, and you are a fairy.

Fairies are usually designated via pastel colors, flowers, tinsel or glitter and floaty fabric. Net or chiffon is the most popular, which is why a tutu always goes over well. The most common fairy tutus are knee length or in a handkerchief cut, a la Tinkerbell. It can be paired with a leotard, corset or camisole on top and contrasting tights and ballet flats to finish off the look. You can dress this fairy costume with any number of accessories – ribbons around the arms and legs, flowers or more wings at the wrist and decorations at the neck and on the head.

Famous Fairies

Other common ideas for fairy costumes are based on fairies in film and literature. The aforementioned Tinkerbell is one of the most popular, it doesn't hurt that Disney licenses her classic costume. Everyone knows the green minidress with the handkerchief hem and the wings. Tinkerbell is barefoot, but again, ballet flats or even sandals are acceptable to finish off the costume.

There are a number of other famous fairies in the Disney canon. Sleeping Beauty's three fairy godmothers would be an elaborate but fun group costume. If you have a fourth, she can be the evil fairy Maleficent.

The Blue Fairy from Pinocchio is another classic. You can make this costume simply from a vintage blue nightdress with some attached chiffon and wings.

Other famous fairies have a less identifiable look. Shakespeare's fairies, such as Ariel from The Tempest and all the Midsummer Night's Dream fairies are usually dressed in a simple, classic style, such as with ballet lyrical or woodland-themed costumes. Oberon and Titania can be a nice couples costume – you can create matching wreaths.

For a funny costume idea in keeping with the fairy theme, you can be the Tooth Fairy and do any number of amusing things with dental floss, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The Faerie Look

Often related to Cosplay events are faerie-themed parties and festivals. The spelling indicates a more Gothic, romantic approach to the look, although the basic fairy costume idea can work for these events so long as you forgo anything too fake-looking. These costumes can get extremely elaborate with top-quality stage makeup and detailed outfits. However, if you're just going for fun, you can opt for a more simple look. Many women just wear Renaissance Faire corsets over tutus or linen skirts with lots of ribbons. A floral wreath with matching adornments on the arms or wrists and ballet flats will finish off your look. You can wear a half-mask if you like, decorated with feathers, or apply sparkling makeup.

These are also the sort of events where being an "evil" fairy is acceptable and you can play with that look as well. The typical fairy costume ideas for the dark side consist of black garb and wings that look more like bat or beetle wings, rather than something light and airy. You can also wear a dark cloak instead of wings, if you like, and heavy black boots and makeup.

Faerie events have become so popular, you can find any number of pictures online, so do some browsing to get even more inspiration.
