Costume Rentals
From LoveToKnow Costumes
If you are in need of a special costume, but do not wish to spend a fortune, perhaps you should consider costume rentals.
Why Use Costume Rentals?
Costume rentals are not the right choice in every situation. For example, rentals are not the best choice for a simple, inexpensive princess costume for your daughter's dress-up fun. However, a rental would be appropriate for a high-dollar Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast! Rentals are ideal for elaborate, expensive costumes such as:
- Renaissance costumes
- Medieval costumes
- Period pieces
- Mascot costumes
- Masquerade costumes
- Historical re-enactment
- Carnival
- Haunted house
- Suits of armor
- Theater, movie, or commercial costumes
- Theme weddings
- Santa or Bunny suit
To determine whether or not a costume rental would suit your needs, simply compare the purchase price to the rental price. If the prices are approximately the same, it makes sense to buy the costume. If, however, there is a large disparity, a rental just might be practical. For example, many mascot costumes cost well over $1000. If you can rent the same costume for $100, that is a huge savings.
It is also important to think about how frequently the costume will be worn. If the mascot is to be used once for a store grand opening, renting makes sense. On the other hand, a mascot that will be worn several times a year, every year, would probably be a valid purchase.
Finding Costume Rentals
Shops offering costume rentals are located in most major cities. Simply look in your local Yellow Pages. Unexpected sources sometimes offer rentals, as well. In your search for costumes, check with:
- Local theater groups
- College drama departments
- Local opera houses
- Performing dance troupes
Choosing a Company
In choosing a rental company, it is always tempting to judge based solely on price. While price is certainly a consideration, it isn't the only thing that counts. You'll also want to compare:
- Sanitation policies. Costumes must be professionally cleaned and sanitized between costumers. This is important for health and safety, as well as the condition of the costumes.
- Rental terms. Carefully compare the rental agreements. Look for any hidden fees or penalties.
- Return policy. Look, too, at each company's policies regarding the costume return. Will you be responsible for having the costume cleaned? Is there any flexibility in the return date? Make sure you understand exactly when the costume is due back at the store.
- Guarantees. Does the company guarantee that the desired costume will be available when needed? Does it offer a guarantee as to the quality and condition of the costume?
Costume Rentals Online
Some companies even offer costume rentals online. Before you place an order with such a company, make sure you understand the rental agreement. Ask questions about the return shipping policy and the cleaning policy. When dealing with an out-of-state costume shop, it is important that you factor in shipping costs and shipping times.
