Cheap Adult Halloween Costumes

From LoveToKnow Costumes

With the economy on the down swing, many hope to have some fun while maintaining a budget, so cheap adult Halloween costumes are the order of the day. Whether you buy, borrow or contrive, you can save a ton of money and still look as great, or scary, as you hope to this season.

The classic witch costume is cheap and easy to create.

Classic Cheap Adult Halloween Costumes

Part of Halloween’s origin involves the assumption that demons and the dead rise on All Hallow’s Eve and walk the earth. It is believed they can snatch away the living. Therefore, anyone who hopes to live through the night has to disguise themselves as an underworld creature. This is why traditional costumes were always variations on ghosts, witches and assorted ghouls. But even wealthy people in the 19th century were not prepared to spend much, if any, money to make a costume that would be worn only once. In the days before consumerism, people were very mindful of what they bought or acquired. Thus, Halloween costumes were homemade pieces, often contrived from scraps, rags and dye. Most people just wore a mask.

A ghost costume is still one of the cheapest and easiest you can make, although not everyone has white sheets anymore. You can go to the fabric store and buy a few yards of unbleached muslin for very little money and then cut out eyeholes and throw it over your head.

Making Your Own

Cheap adult Halloween costumes can be found in any drugstore. The costumes look as cheap as they are, but you can get one for $20 or even less. So why bother making your own, who has that kind of time anyway? If you have any interest in doing more to protect the environment, cutting down on the purchasing of really cheap products, usually made in China, is one way to go. The costumes can rarely be reused and run a good chance of ending up in a landfill. If you make something simple instead, you can recycle the fabric and keep things local. Making a costume, unless you are sewing it, does not have to take much time. You can buy a mask base in a craft shop or make one with paper, cardboard or fabric. This can be a very fun afternoon project to engage in with your kids, or a friend’s kids, who are always delighted when adults get it on the fun. You can spend less than $5 and have a great time that unleashes your creativity to boot.

Using old clothes, borrowing someone else’s clothes or creating a funny mix of items is another way to keep the costs down, or in this case, free. For a woman with a black dress, combine black stockings, heels and a piece of velvet wrapped around the head to be Mata Hari, or any spy. A man can wear a suit with a toy gun and be James Bond.

You don’t have to have stage makeup handy to make yourself look ghoulish. Exaggerated lipstick and eyeliner will do the trick, further cutting down on expenses.

Another Free Option

You can obtain cheap costumes from sellers on eBay, but if you are really looking to save money, you might be able to get something for free. Try Freecycle, a great site that offers a forum where people can give things away and make requests. You might have a harder time getting something specific, but you may also be pleasantly surprised with what people have that they find they can live without.

Thrift Shops

The local thrift shop has always been one of the best options for cheap adult Halloween costumes. Stuff that is fascinating to look at but unwearable for any other occasion is perfect for Halloween. Once you’re done with it, donate it back to charity!
