Basic Styles of Belly Dancer Costumes
The sensuality and fluid movements of belly dance are usually accompanied by flowing materials. Belly dancer costumes can be quite different, but most are derived from a basic costume design, consisting of a bra, belt, and skirt, wrapped scarf, or pantaloons around the hips. Pantaloons are used less in modern times.
Costumes referred to as Oriental belly dancer costumes have a bra, skirt, one piece belt, and veil. Costumes consisting of the bra, skirt, and veil with the addition of a of a two or three piece belt are called Turkish belly dancing costumes.
Other costumes consist of a bra and skirt connected with Lycra mesh; a flowing one piece garment with open sides; and knee length gathered dresses.
Materials and Designs
Common Materials
Belly dancing costumes should be made of material that is able to flow and move with the body; however, material that is too thin will not hold up well to the continuous movements of the dance. Materials commonly used include:

- Satin
- Some cottons
- Lycra -- for bra or mesh
Accents and Embellishments
Belly dancer costumes contain intricate designs and beautiful accents. Brilliant or contrasting colors, shimmering metallic looks, and unique designs may be part of a costume. Embellishments may include:

Costume Care
Belly dancer costumes need gentle care to preserve their beauty and detail. Although costume care may depend on the specific fabric or fabrics used, most costumes should be carefully hand washed or dry-cleaned.
Spot cleaning and airing out after use are recommended.

Shoes for belly dancing costumes are typically tied or half-soled sandals, soft soleless shoes, or dance soles to allow fro ease of movement and comfort.

Pricing for professional belly dancing costumes ranges from about one hundred for a standard costume to over one thousand dollars for a custom designer costume.
Halloween belly dancer costumes are lower in price ranging from about twenty to eighty dollars. Halloween costumes can be purchased in party and costume shops, lingerie shops, and department stores.
